Video 1 - Meet Thalia

My name is Thalia. My role is a Customer Delivery Driver, and I’ve been here for eight weeks.

I just wanted a new change-up, a new position. I’ve been a stay-at-home mother for a couple of years, so I just wanted to get back into the workforce, and I seen the opportunity come up.

So, I come in the mornings, I’ll have a coffee, we sit in the driver’s hub, and we look at our departure board, which tells us what van we’re in.

Our vans loaded and ready to go. Our routes all set, and off we go.

The requirements for this role is a car license and a good attitude.

My favourite thing about being on the road is seeing the sights and new areas.

My best thing about the job is the people, the customers, everything. I just love being here, I love feeling welcomed by everyone, and I love how grateful the customers are to receive their order: they come out the door with a big smile on their face.

My biggest surprise when I first started was the culture, the care, how they look after you as an individual. Everyone’s happy to see you, we care about each other, we have banter, we play games, a bit of pool, treat you with respect, and get to know you as a person.

Being a mum and juggling work can be tough, but thankfully Coles always support me.

If I have a rough night’s sleep or the kids have me up all night, they notice instantly and they always go above and beyond to make sure I’m happy and I’m comfortable. They always ask how you are and how you’re doing.

My favourite perk is doing my weekly groceries and getting a little bit of a discount on it, make it a bit easier for me at the end of the day. And, also, the physio, being able to come here and get some physio done after our long week is fantastic.

The biggest impact this role has done with me is my confidence in regards to driving in the city. It was a bit nerve wracking for me prior in my own personal vehicle.

Now that I’m in the van and I’m comfortable in the van, I could drive the city streets nearly with my eyes closed, even though I wouldn’t!

This role has had a massive impact on my life. It has changed my home life, work life, social life, I feel very confident. I’m not afraid of making phone calls anymore or navigating through tough city streets, and I feel like I’m a lot better when it comes to technology now.

If anyone’s thinking of joining Coles, I would tell them – just do it! It’s a great opportunity, you’ve got heaps of people that’ll help you, you get the training, all you need is a driver’s license and you’re good to go.

Video 2 - Meet Basil

My name is Basil Joseph and I’m a Customer Delivery Driver in the CFC and have been working here for three months now.

Currently, I work in the morning shift, from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

What you have to do is just come on time, clock in, take your van key out; it’s already loaded.

Take the van out, do your deliveries, and just return back on time. That’s it.

When I first came here for the interview, I felt like a bit nervous. But, once I got to know the people, everybody is supportive, so they were, like chilling, laughing; everybody was easy. It’s like I’m feeling like home here.

We are, like the first face the customer sees. Deliver on time, deliver their way; whatever I do, I make them happy.

I was a bit of an introvert, honestly, you can see that. At first, I thought, I won’t be able to meet the customers. How I do, how I meet them, how I greet them. Happy to meet the customer now; I don’t have any worries. I’m pretty confident that I can deal with them.

Background: Basil is seen delivering two bags of groceries to the customer.

Customer: Yep! Thank you!

Basil: When you see the van you feel a bit nervous, but it isn’t. It’s pretty cool, right. Pretty easy to drive. Just relax and just drive. It’s so easy.

So, this van doesn’t need a HR or anything. Just need a basic car license.

If you are look for a career change, this is the best opportunity. The people here, the support you get form here, the opportunities here are the best.

We got, delivery drivers; we got marshals; we got managers. If you want to do the office job or in-store job, there is the picking and packing thing, so a lot of jobs.

The proudest moment so far is within a short period of time, they promoted me to a marshal, so they saw that I’m confident. Really happy!

Video 3 - Meet Tory

My name is Tory and I’m a Customer Delivery Driver for Coles.

I’ve been wanting to work at Coles for a while. I had a look online and applied for it, and here I am.

I come in at 5:00, I clock in, we have a team huddle, we get assigned for a delivery, we come down to the loading dock and check the van, and then we actually go out and do deliveries.

I like long distance country driving where I like to put the music on and just enjoy the route.

I’m a hearing impaired; I have a disability. When I first came on board and told them that I had a disability, I was quite nervous. Their reaction was like, “okay, yeah, that’s fine. What can we do to help you?” That absolutely shocked me, and I know now I can actually say this is my home. I was welcomed in here with open arms and accepted. That’s when I know this was my job for me.

I don’t believe that my disability affects my job and my driving. Coles actually, help me and support me in that role. One example, with the MDT in the van, the volume needed to be up more for me. They’ve allocated that for me.

I came on board anxious and nervous, thinking that I wouldn’t be accepted or liked. But now, we’re all just so close and I just love being here. Absolutely love being here. My team here, they’re great. We accommodate each other. And equally, we respect and support each other in any way we can.

Coming in here thinking that I was going to be a Customer Delivery Driver and driving one of these vans, I absolutely surprise myself to think that I can actually do it. It has definitely grown my confidence and happiness in my life. Even my husband has noticed that I’ve become very confident and happy, and I’m loving it. Absolutely loving this!
